History

The Pavilion was originally built as a cinema in 1923, when it won an award for best facade in London [1].

The building was damaged in World War II, and the original interior destroyed. [2] After the war it was repaired (though not entirely to the original design), and reopened as the Gaumont Theatre. It was then closed again in 1969 for further refurbishment, when a new floor was installed, dividing the large open space into two levels - a cinema upstairs and a Bingo Club below.[1]

In 1974 it became a Grade II listed building although, given the war damage and subsequent alterations, very little now remains of the original interior design or layout.[1] In 1983 the cinema closed, leaving the bingo hall open for a while longer, until its eventual closure in 2001.[1]

In both 2004 and 2006 planning permission was given for conversion into a hotel, but investors withdrew from the project owing to the difficulty of converting the building, in particular the relatively small number of rooms, few of which would have enjoyed natural daylight or views.[1]

Today

The building is presently unoccupied and is in a poor state of repair, as a consequence of which English Heritage have added it to their 'Building at Risk' register.[1]

In 2009 planning permission was again granted to convert the empty building into a luxury hotel, designed by architects BFLS, and to be called the Shepherd’s Bush Pavilion Hotel.[3] The new development is proposed by Simon Hamilton of Hamilton Development, and the new hotel will have 220 rooms. [4]

Shaun Bailey, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Hammersmith (and Shepherd's Bush) said of the plans for redeveloping the Pavilion: “This is exactly the type of activity that we need to rebuild the economy in the Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush area. I welcome any developments that provide employment for local people." [1]
